West Hawaii Explorations Academy will hold its second annual Kanikapila Jam and Hoolaulea from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
The family friendly event will be held on WHEA’s campus on Kahilihili Street within the NELHA Hawaii Ocean Science and Technology Park (across from NELHA’s Gateway Visitor Center)
The live concert event will feature Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner Kainani Kahaunaele, E Kolu Mea Nui with Grammy Award winner Sonny Lim, Warren and Tani Kaneau, Paani Pila, Na Kahua, Keola Grace, Kelii Tavares, G2G, and many other artists. Hungry concertgoers will find local favorites like Hawaiian plate lunches, teri beef plates, mini plates, and poke bowls available for purchase. A snack shack will also be on hand with local flavors like malasadas, prune mui, pickles, preserves, dried fish and fruit, shaved ice, cotton candy and slushies.
During the event, attendees can also take part cultural activities like lauhala weaving, sand petroglyph art, makahiki games, and more. Student docents will also lead tours of the new WHEA campus. Admission is $10 for adults and children older than 10. There is no cost for keiki 10 and younger.
All proceeds from the event will fund science camps, software purchases, project materials, and educational enrichment programs at WHEA, a nationally recognized laboratory school serving as a “magnet” for science-focused, outdoor, hands-on education. It features largescale, long-term projects that meet or exceed performance demands of traditional “standards based” education.
“What I love best about this Hoolaulea is that it forms a bridge between our students and our local music community, allowing each to see the best of one another, and to support oneanother,” said Heather Nakakura, WHEA co-director. “We are truly blessed to have so many wonderful artists donate their time and their talents to give to our students.”
“We hope the whole community will come to learn about our school, and enjoy this incredible day of fun,” she added.
Tickets are available for advance purchase at the WHEA main office by calling 327-4751. Tickets will also be available at the door on the day of the event.
